Mast Head Designs

This is my initial masthead design. I have used my colour scheme effectively and have taken inspiration from other magazines. I think this would work effectively to its unique nature and recognisable design.

I have also made this mast head to suit my colour scheme and the demographics of my audience. This is very similar to the well known rock magazine 'Kerrang's' mast head, therefore this would be less effective to use.

How did you attract/address your audience?

The theme of my magazine is going to be punk pop/rock. My aim is going to be to engage the age range of 16-22 with a social class of B to D as the usual aspects of a reader of bands are individualists/aspirers therefore have the tendency to be artists/un-signed musicians. I chose this magazine as I noticed i would have the most knowledge in these magazines as I am a subscriber to "KERRANG", and as the audience fits the age range to which i belong I can use my personal opinions and the opinions of my class mates to create a magazine both engaging and pleasing to the eye. I would use some bright colours and try to keep the magazine as fitting as i could to the stereotypical punk pop/rock magazine as could. This would involve using a simplistic writing style and a minimalistic use of images. My images will be very band based as this is a main feature of this genre of magazine, some of my shots will include a have a background and others will have a simple white backdrop, by this I will try to keep the magazine interesting and original as readers of this age will have a sorter attention span than those of an older age. My colour scheme will hold the stereotypical punk colours of black and red and white commonly used by such bands as "Guns & Roses", "All Time Low", "Paramore" and "Asking Alexandria". As white is a signifier of peace and purity it contrasts to the black as a connotation for death and evil, I am very much into heavy reds and i believe this is a prominent colour with such colours as white and black.
My front cover will consist of a bold masthead of which will stand behind my models of which being a group long shot of the feature band in my magazine. This will draw in the audience as aspirers will want to know the journey of this band to where they are now. My models clothes will follow the colour scheme of the magazine. I will try to get a female in the front cover band to have the magazine appeal more to a female audience. My magazine will have simple sell lines running down the sides of the image and will have several smaller plug images below advertising other bands inside the magazine. There will be an advertised competition on the front cover to appeal to a target audience interested in trying to win free tickets to a gig etc. There will be a main sell line running over the band image which relates to the band, this would say something to the effect of...
"WE WANT YOU! AND THE WORLD"-(kerrang!)
The price and issue number will be displayed on the magazine giving clear reference to the cost of te magazine and if the buyer is a collector may want to keep this magazine as a collector’s item, which would make the issue number an important aspect of the magazine. The date will also be clearly displayed on the magazine as well as a catchy appealing tag line which will become familiar to the magazine over time.
My contents page will consists of many pages displayed in clear columns, I will use my colour scheme as reference between page number and page title in my magazine. I will use scattered images of bands on my contents page and by this I will keep my magazine entertaining for my target audience. My contents page will display links to the website of my magazine and suggest for the die-hard reader of the magazine to join my magazine on social networking sights to link to the zeitgeist of the time. My magazine contents will include a small mast head to keep the magazine relatable to the front cover and will follow the same colour scheme and font of text. I also will clearly display a page number at the bottom of my contents page to keep reference to the page number clear, I will use the same way of showing the page number throughout the magazine.
