Key Concepts of Magazines

This is the initial research I had done on the nusic magazine industry. I have explored the history of music magazines. I broken the key concepts up into four main catagories, being...
Codes & Conventions
Audience
Representation
Institution

Drawn Magazine Drafts

This is my initial double-page spread, this was top help me get an idea of what i personally wanted my doube page spread to look like and whether it would be effective.

This is my contents page initial drawn draft. I used this to give me brief idead of what to include, and I used another contents page to find these conventional ideals of a music contents page.

This is my first draft of my front cover, I used this as a stimulus to my main front cover and built upon this as a foundation.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

How does your magazine convey the representation of social groups?

How my magazine follows the represtation of social groups

My magazine appeals to the social group of punk-rockers through the stareotypical red, black and white colour scheme throughout, as red and black directly link to rock music and horror movies with red being a signifier for blood and black for darkness and night.
My front cover is constructed of many different images, the images depict the stareotypical ideology of a rock band with vibrant hair colours and confident facial expressions. My magazine converts the idea of rock from a male genre to more of a female outlook through the idea that my magazine is based on female rock icons of our era.
The use of the slanted sell line box gives the impression of carelesness which also conotes to my target audience of punk-pop-rock lovers through the idea that they love to be individualists.
My contents page follows the same idea with the female theme running through, it also has my colour scheme. One of the images on my contents page depicts a male guitarist in mid-air, this powerfully highlights the idea of the social group the magazine is directed towards through the abbrassive stance and the flicking long hair (as stareoptypically punk rocker males have long hair). The text is bold which conotes the typical rocker attitude of being bold and individualm whilste the background is minimalistic to give my images the right amount of exposure.
The title page of my double-page spread conveys the key theme I will be speaking of in my double-page spread. I have used a full bleed image to grab the audiences attention and make it obvious to who this is about, being female with black long hair which connotes to my target audience through the idea of punk-rockers typically having long hair of either very dark or very light coloured hair. The black borders stand out strongly highlighting the strong individualist nature of my target audience.

In what ways does your product use, develope or challenge forms of real media product?

What have you learned about technologies from the process of construction of your product?

During the process of creating my product I explored a number of different
computer programmes and techniques of getting the needed results. The base
programme I was required to use was Adobe Photoshop. This is a programme
that allows me to create effective and professional looking magazines due
to the intricate details that you can look into. Adobe Photoshop is widely
used in the magazine industry to create professional magazines and edit
images effectively, this is why Adobe Photoshop was an ideal choice of
programme to use to begin creating my magazine.
I explored different ways of displaying my images, I played with variations
of back-drop from having a brick backrground to having a white back-drop. I
also played with colour by editing the background colour by changing it to
black and white to highlight the main picture, i reinforced this by editing
the brightness and contrast of the model of my image. This worked effectively
as the importance of my model to the double-page spread becomes clear.
I also effectively created a mood through my images by having the contrast
lowered to reinforce a dull mood, or had the brightness hightened to
highlight a up-beat feeling to my magazine.
I used variation in colour as photoshop offers these through swatches to keep
the colour scheme constant, yet this allowed me to make minor changes to shade
of the colour to match the mood of the page I was catering the colour too.
Photoshop lets you have complete creative freedom as you start with a blank
canvas and from there build into having a range of pages making up a magazine,
I fixed on the use of a constant black boarder as a base to my magazine to keep
my magazine consistant and well orginised. In some stages of making my magazine
I had difficulties performing tasks e.g. cutting out an image, painting in colour
etc. due to the use of many technical tools Photoshop has to offer yet overcame
these difficulties with help from teachers and youtube tutorials.
I also used a website to hold all my work as a database called 'Blogger', this
was an effective piece of technology which helped me keep track of what work I
had completed and effectively orginised my coursework. When i began using this
programme I had difficulties with posting with labels etc. yet with experience
I have learnt how to do numerous things on Blogger and it has been a great help
to me.

Advertising

This is one of the ways i would advertise my image. I have decided to super-impose my magazine and mast head onto a billboard to have a better idea of what it would look like and the proportion I would have the poster on the billboard.
